The Big Six Santa Fes that the B&O bought from Baldwin in 1914 (Locobase 1036) mostly served as road freight engines throughout their careers. Two of them--6009 and 6030--took a different route, however, when they were converted to mighty ten-wheel switcher/pusher engines at the company's shops in the mid-1920s.

The modfications entailed much more than simply removing each truck. Indeed, the only dimensions that remained the same were the cylinder volume, driver diameter, and wheelbase. A new boiler shorter by 25% and pressed to a higher degree provided the steam from water heated in a smaller firebox. Axle loading increased, a useful change in heavy switcher.

As North American 0-10-0s went, these were not big engines, but in anybody's book, they were massive switchers.
