This steam dummy helped to open this street railway and was so characteristic of the motive power that the line would be known as the Motor Line. According to Diers & Isaacs, the line "...was built to promote development by providing reliable transportation from the fringes of the city to the downtown. Investors saw it as a way to open the area around Lakes Calhoun and Harriet for recreation and housing."
