Ola'a Sugar Company 0-4-2 Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 30 (Locobase 15456)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 79, pp. 352. See also Locobase 13766 for more information about the OSC. Works number was 61453 in August 1930.

This Big Island plantation had bought Moguls (Locobase 13766) for more than a decade, the last arriving in 1921. This little oil-burning plantation saddle tank joined that set nine years later. It used the Sheedy-Garrick oil burner, which was inserted through a tube set in the front water leg. (A 1905 test showed that the Sheedy-Garrick would burn molasses efficiently; Locobase does not know if that fuel was burned by the OSC.) The 30's stack was the bootleg type with a netting lid over the top.

The engine operated for the OSC until it was scrapped in 1950.
