Class 1 (Locobase 15455)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 79, p. 348. See also . Works number was 59888 in February 1927.

Compact, oil-burning plantation side tank operating in Ka'uai that had all the usual features of a sugar engine and a plate mounted on short struts over the flared stack to fend off at least some of the rain that fell frequently on Hawaiian plantations.

Grove Farm had originally been established in 1864 by George Norton Wilcox, who bought the farm from its original owener. Wilcox managed the operation for decades and in 1922, incorporated the plantation as the Grove Farm Company. He died in 1933 at the age of 94.

Three of his daughters--Etta, Elsie, and Mabel--saw the plantation as a historic treasure, initially focusing their attentions on the Waioli Mission House in Hanalei. When Mabel was 92, she and her companion Sophie Judd Cluff successfully argued for the preservation of Grove Farm as it was in the 1870s. By then the plantation had preserved four locomotives. Three are described in Locobases 11738, 14213, and 15405. The fourth--Paulo--was a Hohenzollern product shipped in 1887 to support construction of the Waita Reservoir. All four locomotives were restored beginning in 1975.
