This was an unusually small and low-powered Eight-wheeler, even in the narrow-gauge world. The OR & L was built originally to connect Honolulu with 'Aiea 12 mile away. Locobase can't say for sure if the Leahi was present at the railway's opening on 16 November 1889. A full-service common carrier, the OR & L remained resolutely 3-foot gauge during its decades of operation.
