Southern Indiana 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 19 (Locobase 12557)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1903, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 24, p.75.. works numbers were 19847-19848 in December 1901, 20736-20737 in July 1902, 20964 in September.

Unlike much of the SIRR's motive power, these Eight-wheelers did not follow the successor Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern to the Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific.

Instead the 19 and 20 went in 1912 to the San Antonio, Uvalde & Gulf as their 6 & 7. When the MP took over the operations of the Link (or "Sausage") Route, the two were renumbered 930-931 and placed in the E-64 class.

By 1911, the three 1902 engines were sent back to Baldwin for rebuilding. Baldwin sold the trio to the Delaware & Northern as their 1, 3, and 2. The D & N was the product of a 1911 reorganization of the Delaware & Eastern. Although the D & E had been planned to connect Schenectady with Wilkes-Barre, Pa (and thus operate Alco engines exclusively, one supposes), it had only extended from East Branch to Arkville, New York.

(See the website, which recounts the story of this line, which remained in operation from 1911 to 1942.)
