Class Kinau (Locobase 11814)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 11, p. 215. Works number was 6782 in May 1883.

This tank was built to a specification of the Hawaiian Railroad that included the ability to run on 20 lb/yard rail, negotiate 82-ft curves, and run equally easily in both directions. It was named Kauk and given the number 2. Apparently, the HR preferred the more typical 0-4-2T, because it traded this engine to the Kahului on Maui for an older Baldwin tank.

The KR clearly was pleased with the trade as they operated the little double-ender (with 8-wheel tender) for more than 40 years before scrapping it in 1926.
