The E & P was a small Nevada narrow-gauge shortline originally built to exploit the thick veins of silver and lead ore. It eventually included 90 miles (145 km) of main line and remained in operation from 1874 to 1910. The latter year saw several miles of track flooded by heavy Spring runoff and rain and the company declared bankruptcy.

Although the line would reopen as the Eureka & Nevada and remain in operation until 1938, the 14 was sold off by the new owners to the Sumpter Valley of Bates, Ore. It was retired in 1931.
