South Buffalo 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 6 (Locobase 12672)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 25, p.257 in May 1903.

The Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh bought one Consolidation with a Vanderbilt boiler (which featured a stayless firebox) in 1901 (See Locobases 4104 and 5257 entries for further comments on the Vanderbilt boiler.).

Locobase wonders what led the nearby South Buffalo to buy two of the same design two years later. The railway was just starting up as the line for the huge Lackawanna Steel steel plant; later owned by Bethlehem Steel, the plant grew to the third largest in the United States. One can't determine whether the oddball vessel was ever replaced, but the 6-7 had been retired by 1927.
