Delaware Bay & Cape May 0-4-4 "Forney" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Bay & City (Locobase 11754)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 9, p. 124. See also Susan Tischler, The Excursionists: A Ticket to Success, found on, 7 November 2010. Works number was 4699 in June 1879.

Originally ordered to the New York & Sea Beach, this tank locomotive went to South Jersey to run along the beach from Sea Grove to Cape May City. Its smoky, sooty effluents were unpopular from the start (Tischler quotes Joe Jordan's Cape May Point - The Illustrated History: 1875 to the Present about the reception:"they were jerky, noisy, and dirty û all those coal cinders getting in your eyes and throat ....") and the system was electrified in 1892.
