Class Ella (Locobase 11811)

Data from Baldwin Logging Locomotives, p. 5 and DeGolyer, Volume 27, p. 66. Baldwin works numbers were 24479 in July 1904 and 32714 in May 1908.

Florence (Florenz when he stepped off the ship in 1849) and Otto Marmet founded the Marmet Coal Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, which was later named for Otto alone. The company's base of operations was a series of "Big Otto" mines near Raymond City, West Virginia.

OMC&M's first two locomotives were the wood-burners Ella and her sister Lena, which was delivered four years later. They were designed for tough service with springs to be

extra heavy and the tank beefed up. The tank's collar was to be doubly thick "as coal is thrown on in large lumps". The tank's false top was also twice as thick as normal to allow easy removal and replacement when worn.

Although specified to negotiate 22-degree curves, a note in Ella's spec says that the spring hangers on the "present engine come against wheels on curves and cut. This to be avoided on new engine."
