Central Australia 2-4-2 Locomotives in Cuba

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Batey (Locobase 14362)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 54 p. 41. See also Cesar J Ayala, American sugar kingdom: the plantation economy of the Spanish Caribbean 1898-1934 (University of North Carolina Press, 1999). Works number was 42436 in September 1915.

Part of the standard line of Baldwin double-ended saddle tank plantation locomotives. This engine probably operated as close to common carrier motive power as a sugar engine was likely to get. It traveled on relatively robust 60 lb/yard (30 kg/metre) rail, albeit track that was "laid in a swamp" as another specification put it. The Central Australia sugar mill was located in Matanzas Province, 154 km (96 miles) southeast of Havana and due north of the later-notorious Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs).
