North Staffordshire 4-4-0 Locomotives in Great_Britain

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class G (Locobase 3055)

Data from "North Staffordshire Railway", The Locomotive, Volume XVI [16] (15 July 1910), p. 135.

Classic British 4-4-0 designed by John H. Adams. Compared to other engines of its time, however, it possessed relatively modest proportions and a small boiler, even in relation to its relatively small grate. It was seen as "an innovation on the NSR" because they were the railway's first 4-4-0s. They were designed to handle summer traffic over the NSR and the through expresses to and from North Wales. They were big enough to handle such trains on the Crewe and Llandudno Junction without stopping for water.

Like many other British engines of the time, it had a Belpaire boiler, rounded steam dome, and a handsome livery (in this case a dark red).

Class KT (Locobase 20183)

Data from "Four-Coupled Superheater Express Engine, North Staffordshire Railway", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XIX [19], No. 251 (15 July 1913).

John H. Adams took the 1910 4-4-0 design described in Locobase 3055 (the first 4-4-0s on the railway) and squeezed a surprisingly sizable superheater in the boiler. Trading in small tubes for the flues led to very little reduction in overall heating surface area.
