Valle de Mexico 2-4-4 Locomotives in Mexico

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 4 (Locobase 16343)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 17, p.30 (and firebox comparison with Locobase 13015, Kosaka Copper Mine, firebox dimensions at DeGolyer, Volume 29, p.198. (Thanks to Thomas Miller's 1 February 2018 email providing the Baldwin builder's number. It led to the creation of this new entry.) Works number was 11889 in May 1891.

This tank joined the VdeM as it completed construction of its first 22 km (13.6 miles).

NB: Locobase estimates the firebox heating surface by comparing the dimensions in the Baldwin spec for this locomotive and essentially identical specs for the Kosaka Copper Mine's saddle tank of 1906. Although the two locomotives do not share many similarities, their dimensions were the same to within 1/4". Moreover, the length to width ratio for both fireboxes was oddly wide to exactly the same extent.
