Class Y (Locobase 2067)

Data from "Decapod Locomotive for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh," Railroad Gazette, Vol XLIII, No 6 (9 August 1907), pp. 151-152, and Alvin F Staufer & Lawrence W Sagle, B & O Power (1964). (Thanks to Chris Hohl for pointing out the valve gear ID and to Jim Ruth for his corrections concerning Clarion Hill.) Works numbers were 42720-42725 in June 1907 and 46408-46409 in August.

Equalization of the six axles involved two clusters: the pony truck equalized with the first two driving axles and the last three driving axles equalized separately.

The only BR&P Decapods, these had very small drivers for pusher service on a 17-mile (27.4 km) that ascended northbound at 68 feet/mile (33.4 m/km) or 1.3% between Clarion, Pa and Freeman. At the time the Ys were the heaviest locomotives Brooks had ever built and trailed tenders with the greatest water capacity then in service..

Jim Ruth emailed Locobase on 20 Jan 2014 with a well-informed update on just where and what "Clarion Hill" actually was on the BR&P:

"These locos were used on "Clarion Hill";but that's not actually between "Clarion" and

Freeman as stated. (The town of Clarion isn't anywhere near there or even on the BR&P.)

The location is known as "Clarion Junction";and is at Johnsonburg PA. There was a yard and helper station there at the base of the hill. (MAY have got the name as it's right

by the river, and the junction of the east and west branches of the Clarion River is in

Jo-Burg.)

To confuse matters more, there was another "Clarion Jct" near the town of Clarion..

The class was later superheated - see Locobase 9616. On the B&O they retained the Y class designation, but were renumbered 6500-6507.

Locobase isn't sure when the BR & P updated the Decks it had bought in 1907 (see Locobase 2067). The revision was confined primarily to the boiler, which surrendered the usual sheaf of fire tubes in favor of larger flues. The firebox heating surface included 30.2 sq ft (2.8 sq m) of arch tubes.

The result was a drier drag-freighter that served the BR & P and the B & O until 1950.
