Utah Railway 2-10-2 "Santafe" Locomotives in the USA

The Utah Railway Company started in 1911 and was incorporated in January of 1912, in the State of Utah under the name of Utah Coal Railway Company. In May of 1912, the name was changed to Utah Railway Company. The railway was built to hull coal from the mines to other connecting railroads.

In 1917, the Utah had the following equipment: four Consolidation type locomotives, which it leased from the Southern Utah Railroad, six Santa Fe type locomotives, fourteen flat cars, five cabooses and over 2,000 steel gondola cars.

The first Santa Fe type locomotives arrived in September 1917. These locomotives, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, were assigned road numbers 100 and 102. They had 63" diameter drivers, 29.5" x 30" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 200 psi, they exerted 70,450 pounds of tractive effort and the locomotives each weighed 382,100 pounds. By the end of 1917, a total of six Baldwin-built 2-10-2 locomotives were on the roster numbered 100 through 105.

In 1920, two more Baldwin-built 2-10-2s were added to the roster. This pair were similar to the ones delivered in 1917 but were 16,800 pounds heavier. They were given road numbers 106 and 107.

The last "Santa Fe" to arrive came in 1923. It was also built by Baldwin and carried road number 108. It had 63" diameter drivers, 29.5" x 30" cylinders, a boiler pressure of 200 psi, exerted 70,450 pounds of tractive effort and the locomotive weighed 369,500 pounds.

There are no surviving Utah Railway 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type locomotives.
