Class 10 (Locobase 7224)

Data from RI to 1951 Locomotive Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 41, pp. 151+. Works numbers were 36101-36102 in February 1911.

The boilers of these Moguls were built to American Locomotive specifications. The Baldwin specs stated that the Alco drawing 139-S-4990 could be "modified in dimensions to suit specifications", but was to be followed with regard to the fire door, position of the 610 Tate flexible stay bolts, mud ring section, pocket flues (one in front flue sheet, two in the back flue sheet), check [valve] position, and any "changes in red".

The flexible stay bolts totaled 610.

Locobase doesn't know what service the 10 and 11 performed, but suspects it was transfer freight operations in the Peoria area.

Less than 25 years later (on 3 May 1935) the class was declared "obsolete", which is sad-sounding, somehow.


Class G-19/5 (Locobase 7191)

Data from RI 11 - 1903 Locomotive Class & Diagrams supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. Works numbers were 1439-1446 in October 1888; 1545-1458 in November, 1469-1474 in December, 1483-1492 in January 1889, 1498-1510 in February.

Apparently the Rock Island didn't indulge itself in operating Moguls as this seems to be the only class of any size that used that wheel arrangement.
