Omaha, Kansas City & Eastern 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class D-6 (Locobase 5487)

Data from the locomotive diagram published on Vernon Beck's website -- [] (accessed 22 March 2003) and DeGolyer, Volume 22, p. 262. Works numbers were 17543-17544, 17554-17555 in March 1900.

Like the D5, say Chicago, Burlington & Quincy historians Corbin & Kerka (1960), the sketch of the D-6 is of a design for a Consolidation that was never actually built. Later information shows that the class was ordered by the Kansas City & Northern Connecting, went into service on its successor Omaha, Kansas City & Eastern and was taken into the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City in 1902.

At some point, the firebox dimensions changed, probably by adding arch tubes, so that the heating surface area now measured 203 sq ft (18.86 sq m) and evaporative heating surface area increased to 2,241 sq ft (208.2 sq m).

The four engines served the QO&KC until the late 1920s. 31 was scrapped in July 1927, 32 in August, 34 in May 1929, and 33 in the following July; all were dismantled at Eola.
