New Orleans Great Northern 4-4-0 "American" Locomotives in the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 6908)

Data from 1928 NOGN Locomotive Diagram book supplied in May 2005 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange. See also DeGolyer, Volume 28, p. 294 and Baldwin Locomotive Company, Record of Recent Construction, Nuber 59 (Philadelphia, Pa, 1906), pp. 18-19. Works numbers were 28335, 28339-28340 in June 1906; and 29933-29934, 30016 in January 1907.

Locobase also was suspicious of the builder's date, but Drury (1993) shows the same figure. The NOGN diagram also reveals that the unit cost for this class ranged from $13,462.29 for 106 (love the precision of the 29 cents) to $13,728.25 for 104. Baldwin's Recent Record of Construction's photo reveals that the NOGN described itself as the "Ozone Route" on its tender., its bottlenecked boiler and extended smokebox. The specs reveal that although the safety valve setting was specified as 200 psi, the engines were actually run at 180 psi.

They seem to have left service soon after the NOGN's absorption by the GM&N.
