Class 1 (Locobase 11679)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 14, 199. Works number was 9575 in October 1888.

This locomotive supported the construction of the Maryland Steel's huge new steel mill and shipyard in eastern Baltimore. The railroad ran 5.46 miles from Colgate Creek to Penwood Park. Even though it negotiated only a short distance, the #1 was one of the largest Moguls to go into service at that time in terms of evaporative and firebox heating surface area. Its cylinder volume was also among the largest.

Passenger traffic on the B & SP began on 11 February 1889 to convey workers to the facility.

The #1 was sold or transferred to the Northern Central Railway in Baltimore in 1893 and eventually wound up with the B & SP's parent Maryland Steel in 1903.
