Class 15 (Locobase 12505)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 22, p. 122. Works number was 16737 in May 1899.

Very similar to the Rockwood & Tennessee River Mogul shown in Locobase 12358, this example operated in New York State. The specs outline the stiff demands imposed by narrow gauge, mountain operation: "Estimated to haul about 150 tons up straight grade of 169 ft per mile [3.2%]. " Maximum curvature on the main line was 16 degrees, in the sidings 26 degrees.

It began operation on 5 December 1887 between Plattsburg, New York to Lake Saranac. It ran two passenger trains a day along the entire length of the line. Soon after the 15 and 16 arrived on the property, however, the Delaware & Hudson gained control of the line and widened the gauge to standard.

Out of a job in the East, the 15 & 16 went to the Tonopah in Nevada as 2 and 1, but that line converted to standard gauge in 1905. Oregon's Sumpter Valley Railroad in Baker City rescued the two and put them into service in 1906. The 1 was wrecked in 1927 and the 2 retired in 1930.
