Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 203 (Locobase 11410)

Data from "Locomotive Building" Railroad Gazette, Vol XLII, No 8 (22 February 1907), pp. 257. See also Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 31, p. 33. Works numbers were 31593, 31608, and 31617 in October 1907.

The DM, IF & N was incorporated on 27 November 1899 to support the construction of a line from Des Moines to Iowa Falls, 74 miles away. In July 1908, after the delivery of these 3 relatively light Moguls, it was bought by the Saint Paul & Des Moines. The SP & DM in turn was sold to the Saint Paul & Kansas City Short Line Railroad in August 1911. An extension from Carlisle to Beech and thence to Allerton (65 miles) was completed in September 1913.

Although the SP & KCSL was leased to the Rock Island in November 1913, it retained sufficient corporate independence to buy the Keokuk & Des Moines Railway in November 1924. Nevertheless, the KC Short Line renumbered this trio. They were scrapped in September 1935.

The KC Short Line wasn't officially consolidated into the Rock Island until 1 January 1948.
