Class R (Locobase 14100)

Data from American Locomotive Company Light Locomotive Parts & General Products Catalog No. 10057, reproduced in the 8 October 2010 entry of http://alcohistory.blogspot.com/ . The 56 (works number 65975 in November 1924) was the last of the Class R Moguls and the third of three to come from Schenectady (the other two came from Pittsburgh). Given the 10-year history of this five-engine class, Locobase cannot say for certain that all of them had the same heating surface areas or other detail dimensions. Three of the five had engine weights of 139,000 lb (63,049 kg), while 52 and 56 are shown in the roster to weigh 141,000 lb (63,957 kg).

Locobase 1352 shows the Kewaunee, Green Bay & Western's Class R, a very similar design with somewhat greater amounts of heating surface area. It's quite likely that the 52-55 were also built to that design, but there were detail differences (53 was the only Green Bay Route engine to have an Alligator crosshead, for example.)

After the Moguls been in service for a while, GB&W upgraded some of them with piston valves operated by Walschaerts gear and superheaters. Seven even had Nicholson thermic syphons installed in their fireboxes from 1925-1929.
