J F Welch Lumber Company 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Daisye (Locobase 12298)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 21, p.268. Works numbers were 16289 in October 1898.

Very shortly after Daisye [sic], a very light Mogul, was produced and delivered to its Howison, Mississippi buyer in Harrison County, the L N Dantzler Lumber Company bought all of J F Welch company's assets for $75,000 and the Native Lumber Company was incorporated to operate it. They didn't "correct" the spelling of the locomotive's name.

Native Lumber operated the 2 for at least 30 years within a challenging set of constraints. Rail weight was fixed at 25 lb/yard (12.5 kg/metre), the sharpest curve was 8 deg (143 m/469-ft radius) and maximum grade was a stiff 6% (317 ft per mile).

PS Locobase thinks "Daisye, a very light Mogul" has potential to rival "Thomas the Tank Engine" as a book title ...
