Kahului Railroad 2-6-0 "Mogul" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Maunaolu (Locobase 11500)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1903, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 26, p. 246. Works numbers were 23763 in February 1904.

Originally ordered by the Tonopah Railroad, the engine was instead delivered to the Kahului through its sale to Alexander & Baldwin, one of the "Big Five" sugar companies in Hawai'i that had recently taken over both the Kahului and its main rival the Maui Railroad & Steamship Company.

The 5's tonnage ratings included 900 tons on the level, 375 tons up a 1/2% grade, 225 tons up 1% down to 70 tons up a 3% segment.

After more than 30 years of service on the Kahului, #5 started a second career with Walalua Hyric of Tural Co. (of the Waialua Agriculture Company) and renumbered #2.
