Copper River Land Company 2-6-2 "Prairie" Locomotives of the USA

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 13703)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 27, p. 233. Works number was 35873 in January 1911.

Copper River asked for a locomotive that could negotiate 3% grades and 250-ft radius curves on rails weighing 55-60 lb/yard (27.5-30 kg/metre). This middle-range logging Prairie was the result. For some reason, the spec was emphatic that "Design and construction of boiler to be given special attention".

Marathon County, Wisconsin hosted several railroads, including this line, which was owned by U S Leather. At some point, the CRLC gave title of the 101 to US Leather's associated Rib Lake Lumber Company.
