It wasn't unheard of for a saddle tank operating on a narrow-gauge resource railroad to trail a tender and a look at the relative capacities of tank and tender provide a clue why. The saddle tank draped over the boiler held 400 US gallons (1,514 litres) while the tender held 600 gallons (2,271 litres).
